SIEM and SOAR platforms form the operational backbone of the SOC, but without AI they struggle with scale and noise.
AI replaces static rules with behavioural analytics and groups events into coherent threat narratives. On the SOAR side, it transforms rigid playbooks into adaptive workflows, weighing asset criticality, detection confidence, and business context before acting.
However, these systems are not independent from earlier challenges. They rely on the same models and data pipelines as detection and analytics. If those inputs are flawed, SIEM and SOAR don’t reduce noise, they can amplify it.
When implemented well, SIEM, SOAR, and AI create a compounding effect: each handled incident improves future detection and response. When not, they accelerate incorrect assumptions.
Compliance is becoming a continuous process rather than a periodic exercise.
Frameworks such as ISO 27001 and NIS2 require ongoing monitoring, risk management, and rapid incident reporting. AI can map controls to frameworks, identify gaps, and generate policies: compressing weeks of work into hours.
More importantly, it enables continuous updates of risk registers based on new vulnerabilities and incidents.
For MSSPs, this extends the service model: from supporting audits to maintaining a continuously monitored compliance posture.
The benefits of AI are clear, but so are the risks. Importantly, these risks are not isolated. They directly affect detection, response, and analytics.
- Model reliability: AI can be evaded. Adversarial techniques are increasingly used to bypass detection models.
- Data quality and bias: Poor or incomplete telemetry leads to incorrect conclusions—and at scale, this becomes structured noise across the SOC.
- Explainability: Analysts must understand why a model flags a threat or triggers an action. Without this, trust and accountability break down.
- Automation risk: Incorrect assumptions combined with automated response can disrupt operations.
- Analyst dependency: Over-reliance on AI can reduce analytical depth. If analysts stop challenging outputs, errors go unnoticed longer.
AI does not remove complexity, it shifts where that complexity lives.
